Chair of Trustee Board And Trustee Board Secretary

The Trustee Board for Long Ashton Scouts is a team of volunteers who work together, as charity trustees, to make sure our Scout Group is run safely and legally.  We are also responsible for delivering our new HQ Project.

We are always looking for new Trustees to help bring new ideas.  More details of being a Scout trustee are available here: trustee-info-pack-2026-updated.pdf.  In particular, we are looking for new trustees to be appointed at our AGM on Wednesday 24 June 2026 to take on the following roles:

 

Chair of Trustee Board

We’re looking for a skilled, motivated Chair to lead our Trustee Board and support brilliant Scouting for young people in our community.

About the role

  • Provide clear, collaborative leadership to the Trustee Board, ensuring good governance in line with The Scout Association’s rules and charity law.

  • Work closely with the Group Lead Volunteers to set vision and priorities, enabling safe, high‑quality programmes for young people.

  • Plan and chair effective trustee meetings, keeping us focused on safeguarding, safety, finance, risk, property and compliance.

  • Represent the Group locally and build supportive relationships with parents and the wider community.

  • Oversee annual planning, budgets, fundraising and reserves, ensuring robust policies and transparent reporting.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong chairing and people skills: you can bring out the best in others and keep meetings purposeful and friendly.

  • Sound judgement with the confidence to ask the right questions and make balanced decisions.

  • Organised and reliable, with an eye for governance, safeguarding, and risk.

  • Able to think strategically while keeping practical matters moving.

  • Prior charity governance and scouting experience is a bonus, but not essential - training and support provided.

Time commitment

  • Around 5 - 6 hours per month on average, including c.6 evening meetings per year and occasional events including our AGM. Flexible to suit your schedule.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be 18+.

  • Appointment subject to references, DBS check, and completion of mandatory online training.

Trustee Board Secretary

 

We’re looking for an organised, friendly, and proactive Secretary to support our Trustee Board and keep our Group running smoothly.

About the role

  • Coordinate Trustee Board meetings: prepare agendas with the Chair, circulate papers, and take clear, accurate minutes.

  • Keep us compliant: maintain records, policies, and the trustee register; support annual returns and reporting.

  • Be the communication hub: manage Trustee Board correspondence and ensure actions are followed up.

  • Support good governance: help schedule the AGM, maintain our meeting calendar, and file key documents.

  • Work collaboratively: liaise with leaders, volunteers, parents/carers, and our District/County teams.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong organisation and attention to detail.

  • Clear written and verbal communication.

  • Comfortable with basic IT (email, documents, shared drives).

  • Discreet, reliable, and able to handle confidential information.

  • A team player who can keep things moving between meetings.

  • Prior charity governance or minute-taking experience is a bonus, but not essential - training and support provided.
